Reverend Jason Lee, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born on June 28, 1803 in Stanstead, Quebec. After his ordination in 1834, Jason Lee and his nephew, Daniel Lee, journeyed overland to Oregon to serve the Flathead Indians. It was soon decided to abandon the Flathead mission and establish a new mission in the Willamette Valley. John M. Shively was a native of Kentucky. He came overland to Oregon in 1843 and laid out the a town site at Astoria in 1844. Forced from the area by the Hudson's Bay Company, he eventually went to Washington, D.C. and participated in the negotiations between the U.S. and Great Britain over the status of the Oregon Territory.
